How to increase team cohesion

3 Lessons 10 minutes completion time

What you'll learn:

This course will cover what team cohesion is, what factors influence cohesion, and some best practices to improve your team.

What drives team cohesion?

If team cohesion is as simple as having one unified goal, then why do so many teams struggle with this? One key factor is self-awareness. A lack of self-awareness can cause even a team with clear goals to fumble. If individuals don’t understand themselves, it will be difficult to interpret how to interact with others. This can lead to disengagement — feeling like you’re either not a part of the team or lacking the desire to be part of it.

Check out the activity below to see an example of individuals who aren’t self-aware in action.

It’s important to know your strengths and weaknesses so you can better adapt when problems arise. You might not always be best equipped to tackle every problem, and that’s okay. We don’t all have to be perfect, but we do have to complement each other. This is why self-awareness is so pivotal.

A cohesive team needs to be able to negotiate their differences in preferred working styles to determine who is best suited for what roles within the team. Tools like The Predictive Index’s Behavioral Assessment™ will allow you to get a clearer picture of your people’s behavioral preferences and facilitate conversations between team members.
